EBEN ENASCO REPORTING

The Edo State Government says it has stepped up operations against criminal elements across the state as part of efforts to strengthen security and restore public confidence.

The Government officials also cautioned against the spread of negative propaganda, warning that false reports and sensational claims can create unnecessary panic and undermine security efforts.

Speaking to journalists during the monthly briefing organized by the Ministry of Information and Strategy, the State Commissioner for Public Security and Safety, Hon. Festus Ebea, urged residents to rely on verified information and to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies.

He cited the case of a lady who posted claims that schools within the metropolis were under attack by kidnappers.

The woman, according to him, is now in police custody for spreading falsehoods and facing the consequences of her actions.

According to the Commissioner, her actions caused unnecessary panic that attracted the Inspector General of Police who swiftly directed her immediate arrest and a further investigation.

Ebea said the government remains committed to protecting lives and property, and urges citizens to report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities.

Speaking of government efforts to curb insecurity, he revealed that, security agencies have discovered that some citizens are hiring and harboring Fulani herders in their homes, who in turn are involved in kidnapping operations.

He also linked the use of hard drugs among youths to the rise in violence and criminality across the state.

However, he said, collaboration between the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, and the media will help strengthen the prosecution of offenders.

Hon. Ebea further warned against self-kidnappings and staged abductions in the state, describing them as barbaric and a serious challenge to security efforts.
