The need to obey Court orders and judgments by the Federal and State Governments has been stressed by the Benin Branch of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA.

It described the act of flouting court orders as an intimidation of the Judiciary system in the country and call on authorities to advance above such acts.

An address delivered by the Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association, Benin Branch, Nosa Francis Edo-Osagie, at the opening ceremony of the 2022/2023 Legal year in Benin City, said gross indifference by the Executive to Court orders is the most despicable.

He urged the Edo State Government to avoid joining any act attracting increased support from States whose governments take delight in noncompliance, adding “government, however, Powerful, must render itself amenable to the due processes of the law”.

While expressing delight for the completion of the new wing of the state high court as well as the handing over of a National Industrial Court, and another government present in the judiciary operations by Obaseki’s led government, Edo Osagie bade the government to extend a hand of fellowship to the Magistrate and Customary courts in the state.

Citing section 280 sub-section one of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Edo Osagie took a swipe at the Edo State Government for repealing the Customary Court of appeal in 2015.

He explained the role of the customary court of appeal as one of the notable courts of record outlined in section six sub-section five of the Constitution envisaged to exercise appellate Jurisdiction over appeals emanating from the decision of Customary and Area Courts.

In a similar vein, the Lions’ Bar Chairman also expressed concerns over the action of the Edo state government’s inability to pay a backlog of Seven Months’ salaries of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, Edo State Chapter.

He portrayed it as unjust and unpleasant, just as he appealed to governor Obaseki to approve the payment to allow a functional Court System.
