A Nigerian man, Isaiah Amadin, has escaped from a correctional facility in Asaba, Delta State, after being arrested for attending a secret gay wedding.

Amadin, who identifies as LGBTQ+, claims he bribed a personal assistant of the head of the Nigeria Correctional Service Command with NGN 2 million to secure his release.

Amadin, a 31 years old from Benin, Edo State was arrested on August 28, 2023, alongside his partner, Wisdom, at a secret gay wedding ceremony in Warri, Delta State. He was detained, paraded on national television, and had his fingerprints taken.

Despite his escape, Amadin fears for his life, knowing that he cannot continue to live in Nigeria without facing prosecution as law enforcement agencies have announced a manhunt on local platforms.

It was reported that Amadin relocated to Northern Nigeria, where he lived in solitude for eight months.

Nigeria’s Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act imposes severe penalties on individuals who engage in same-sex relationships, including up to 14 years in prison.

The law has created a hostile environment for LGBTQ+ individuals, who face widespread persecution, violence, and harassment.

Amadin’s story highlights the dangers faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria and the need for safe havens. Many LGBTQ+ Nigerians have fled the country to seek asylum in more accepting nations, citing fear of persecution and violence.
