The University of Benin Teaching Hospital UBTH has addressed recent controversies surrounding service price reviews, a private laboratory partnership, and allegations against the Teaching Hospital Community.

Addressing Journalists in Benin City on Monday, the Chief Medical Director CMD, Professor Idia Ize Iyamu, UBTH, said they adjusted the prices due to rising costs, following due process and government guidelines.

The Management reiterated that no price review was undertaken arbitrarily, as all adjustments were made after careful consideration of affordability, institutional sustainability, and the hospital’s mandate as a tertiary healthcare provider.

She added that a private laboratory was engaged to complement UBTH’s services, enhance capacity and patient outcomes.

The CMD, however, denied false claims of extortion and profiteering, condemning attempts to malign the reputation of the authority.

The Management unequivocally condemned the false, baseless, and malicious allegations circulating against the Chief Medical Director, insinuating extortion of patients and profit-sharing from laboratory services, adding, “at no time was the CMD engaged in extortion, or any unethical conduct whatsoever”.

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital UBTH, has come to the defense of its Chief Medical Director, CMD, affirming her commitment to professionalism and integrity. According to management, the CMD has consistently upheld the highest standards, and the recent allegations are seen as a deliberate attempt to tarnish her reputation, destabilize the hospital, and erode public trust in UBTH.

UBTH assured the public of its commitment to quality, affordable healthcare, and urges reliance on official communication channels.
