In a thrilling display of strategy and skill, 17-year-old Edo Chess sensation Okemakinde Toluwanimi emerged champion of the maiden Benin U-25 Rapid Chess Tournament, scoring 8.5 points in the 2-day event held at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium’s Media Center on Jan 16-17, 2026.
Toluwanimi edged out Nyuima Tersee Ferdinand 2nd place and Emmanuel Joy Idara 3rd place, both of whom tied with 8.5 points but lost on tiebreakers.
The tournament, sponsored by Cynthia Madu and Thomas Oparaugo’s Cyntoco Services, boasted a ₦2m prize pool.
Speaking shortly after the game event, Irene Ajibola, Secretary, Edo State Chess Association said
Tournaments like this are game-changers for the ingenious athletes, adding that It keeps them sharp, builds confidence, and puts Edo on the chess map.
Ajibola praised the sponsors for backing the event and urged Edo diaspora to support chess development.
