Edo Police Arrest Council Chairman over Alleged Political Violence

The Edo State Police Commissioner, CP Nemi Edwin-Iwo, confirmed the arrest of Esan West Local Government Council Chairman, Collins Aigbogun, on Tuesday.
The arrest follows a petition by the All Progressives Congress APC alleging political violence in the Illeh community, Esan West Local area, in which Aigbogun was implicated.
At a press briefing at the police headquarters in Benin, CP Edwin-Iwo explained that Aigbogun was invited to the Criminal Investigation Department CID and found to have outstanding criminal charges against him.
“He was wanted for brutalizing someone during an altercation with other party members,” the Commissioner said.
Aigbogun has been transferred to Abuja for further investigation.
CP Edwin-Iwo warned non-state actors to stay clear of the upcoming September 21 governorship election, emphasizing that the police are committed to a free and fair poll.
He also announced an ongoing operation to mop up illegal arms across the state’s 18 local government areas.
Meanwhile, the Association of local government Chairmen in Edo State, ALGON, has expressed deep concerns over the harassment and assault on the Esan West Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Collins Aigbogun.

Hon. Newman Ugiagbe, in solidarity protest on Tuesday to the NUJ secretariat in Benin City urged the police authority to prioritise the investigation of the assault on the Chairman and hold the culprit accountable while condemning it.
He emphasised that ALGON is committed to promoting peace, democracy and the rule of law, calling on relevant security agencies to take more proactive steps to end all forms of heinous acts against justice.
