Afrobeat sensation, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, made a historic visit to the Oba of Benin Palace in Benin City, tracing his ancestry and seeking blessings from the monarch.
The popular rapper, who is set to perform in his first Nigerian concert in Benin City this weekend, was visibly excited during his courtesy call on Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, Oba of Benin.
Rema solicited prayers and blessings from the Benin throne, acknowledging his roots and cultural heritage.
He praised Oba Ewuare II for promoting Edo culture and promised to continue representing Benin culture globally.
Oba Ewuare II, in a rare move, blessed Rema in the presence of Benin Chiefs and members of the Royal family, including his children and grandchildren.
The monarch commended Rema for promoting Edo’s cultural heritage and prayed for his success, saying, “We are happy with the way you are promoting Edo Culture around the world. We are indeed pleased with your exploits. May God grant you peace!”
The visit was marked by a cultural blend of traditional and modern music, with Rema performing an impromptu rendition of his hit track, “Calm Down.”
The event also featured Ugho traditional dancing and Oratory displays by Palace officials and prominent loyal subjects of Oba Ewuare II.
As a symbol of appreciation, Princess Oghogho Ewuare presented Rema with a bronze mugshot of the Oba of Benin on behalf of her father.
