The Edo State Police Command has launched a manhunt for Mavis Derek Imasuen, a 24-year-old native of Benin, in connection with the death of his same-sex partner, Alex Ighodaro, 23, in Benin City.
According to Police PRO, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, the incident occurred in October 2023, when an angry mob attacked the couple, resulting in the death of one of the individuals.
The police and state government have condemned the incident, and Mavis Derek Imasuen has been on the run since then.
Nigeria’s laws criminalize same-sex relationships, and the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, signed into law in 2014, prohibits public displays of affection between same-sex couples and restricts the activities of organizations supporting LGBTQ+ rights.
In Benin City, same-sex relationships are considered taboo, and those caught face severe consequences, including instant death judgment according to local traditions and customs.
