The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has expressed his full support for Lieutenant Yerima, the naval officer who confronted the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over a disputed parcel of land in Abuja.
Speaking to journalists during a ministerial press briefing on the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Celebration, Badaru affirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting members of the Armed Forces while carrying out their lawful duties.
“The Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces will always protect our officers performing their duties lawfully. Lieutenant Yerima has acted commendably, and we will ensure his safety,” Badaru stated.
The controversy began when a viral video showed Wike engaged in a tense dispute with the naval officer at a construction site in Gaduwa District, Abuja, over a parcel of land reportedly owned by former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo.
The Defence Minister assured that the matter is being thoroughly reviewed and that any officer performing legitimate duties will receive full protection.
Badaru’s remarks have sparked a debate among the public, with many praising the naval officer for standing his ground and others calling for calm and restraint.
