EBEN ENASCO REPORTING
The Coalition of Association of Private Schools CAPS in Edo State, has expressed concern over the government’s excessive taxation of private schools leaving 10 proprietors with no option than to put up their schools for sales.
During a town hall meeting, the group lamented that private schools pay about nine different levies, including fumigation fees.
This, according to them, has led to financial strain, with 10 proprietors already taken a decision to quit.
The coalition, comprising several educational bodies, emphasized the need for inclusive policy making.
Dr. Osagie Erhunmwunse, State Controller of AFED, stressed that policies must pass three critical tests including; objectivity, inclusiveness, and practicality.
The group called for an inclusive policy making where Private school owners have reached the decision to be part of the process, not just implementers.
Another areas they believe will necessitate Support for private school owners, is for Government to help schools transition to skill-based education as well as provide a practical framework essential for successful policy implementation.
They emphasized that the directive which aims to equip students with practical skills and entrepreneurship training cannot be achieved through directives alone but requires continuous engagement and support from the government.
The CAPS has urged the government to engage with private stakeholders in the education sector to ensure a smooth transition and successful implementation of the skill education policy.
