Edo LGA Politics: CSOs Urge President Tinubu’s Intervention Amid Constitutional Crisis
Eben Enasco Reporting.
Civil Society Organisations CSOs in Edo State have intensified calls for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s intervention to address the blatant disregard for constitutional provisions governing Local Government Areas LGAs in the state.
Edo’s LGAs have continued to face unprecedented threats to autonomy following the purported suspension sparking widespread condemnation.
At an emergency meeting in Benin City, on Monday, the CSOs issued a 48-hour ultimatum for resolution, seeking Presidential intervention.
Addressing journalists, Comrade Emmanuel Ogbidi emphasized critical issues, notably President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent call for state governors to partner with local government authorities for grassroots development.
He added that President Tinubu’s appeal for collaboration underscores the urgency for Edo State to align with democratic principles, ensuring local governments function effectively.
Warning against disregard for Judicial Authority, he stressed that history will judge the actions of those with immunity and those without, who undermine court orders, cautioning against the repercussions of ignoring Supreme Court rulings.
For Comrade Bevy Efe, he awaits the government to comply within 48 hours with the position of the law or face massive mobilization against the disregard for the rule of law.
Comrades Joseph Gbale and Marxist Kola Edokpayi cited the repealed Section 7 of Nigeria’s Constitution as the purported legal basis for the Edo State Government’s suspension of Local Government Councils.
They argued that, Section 7 repealed, nullifies its applicability, emphasising that the state government’s actions contravene constitutional provisions.
In the context of Section 7 repealed in 2017, removed provisions granting states control over Local Government administration, rendering suspensions without constitutional basis.
